Unexpected Gem - Thumbs Up for the Stamp Collector

Along with "Diabolique" by H.Clouzot, this was considered the greatest movie Hitchcock never made. I personally enjoy the attitude of the stamp collector more than anything else in this movie. When faced with the prospect of losing a very important "accidental" investment, he does not fight back or ask for a lawyer, but calmly allows his good nature to rule over the circumstances. I miss people like that.

Often imitated but never better

Stanley Donen crafted a great who dunnit. Audrey plays a recent widow who never really knew what her hubbie did. Out of the woodworks comes a strange assortment of characters asking where's the money. You really don't know who are the good guys or the bad guys until the end.

The dialog crackles and the plot keeps moving in different directions. Add to this a great Mancini score, and you have a great afternoon flick. Kick back and enjoy the show. This is Audrey at the peak and one of Cary's last hurrahs. And the cast of featured players who became stars later is incredible.

This became an instant classic that has been often imitated but never equaled.

Plenty of other reviewers can tell you about the artistic qualities of this movie. What I can tell you is that if you want this movie this is the edition you want.

There are cheaper versions but that's what they are, this criterion edition cost a premium but provides the picture quality you expect from a DVD.
