Not worth the effort |
| ReplayTV and TIVO seem to be two sides of the same coin. You pay for a service that gives them (ReplayTV & TIVO) a wealth of demographics on who watches what. One of the things in the fine print is that you agree to let them know what you're watching. When I did Neilsen ratings, at least there was token compensation. Now we have to pay to let other people know what we're watching. Why can't I just have a box that records what I want without calling the Mother Ship? |

Can't emphasize enough how much you should avoid ReplayTV |
I've tried both the ReplayTV and the Tivo. The capabilities you have with Tivo far exceeds what you can do with the ReplayTV unit. The commercial skip available with the ReplayTV doesn't even begin to compensate for the features it lacks compared to a Tivo unit. A few simple examples of what the Tivo can do but the ReplayTV will not (this doesn't even scratch the surface): If two shows air at the same time, and you have programmed the unit to record all episodes of both, you can set a preference for one over the other on the Tivo, the ReplayTV unit seems to be a bit arbitrary in how it decides which to record, I think it may go by which show was programmed first, regardless, you cannot set a preference. With Tivo you are able to cancel just a single episode, to avoid a single show on the Replay you have to cancel the entire series, which means deleting any shows you have already recorded. Tivo lets you look ahead to see what it intends to record and allows you to make adjustments or cancelations, there is no similar browsing capability on ReplayTV.
So two days after trying the Tivo I never went back to using the ReplayTV. I opened it up, took the hard drive out to put into a little firewire case, and chunked the rest into the dumpster.
And on the product development side, ReplayTV is just trying to sell of the remaining units they have. Their support is horrible and from what I understand they are no longer developing their software, so it will never be improved or updated. |

Replay TVs are the best! |
The Replay TV Series of DVRs are absolutely the best. At a price of $50 after rebate, you can't go wrong. Buy two or three and network them in your house. Record in one room and watch on another! It works REALLY well. There's also a great deal of third party software out there that allows you to download shows to your PC, customize your channel guide, etc. The Replays blow TiVo away IMO. I have 3 Replay units at home and love them. I also have 2 Dish DVRs and the Replays get all the use!
Also, contrary to what another reviewer said, there IS a discount for having more than one Replay model. Additional ReplayTVs after your first unit are just $6.95 per month. |
