DVD is good but not VCR |
| I bought this unit last Christmas (2004). So far I don't have any problem with the DVD, but the VCR is horrible. It doesn't function well with the recording and definitely play lousy VHS. I am thinking to get a new combo this Christmas. |

Acceptably good unit for its price |
This unit works acceptably well given its very low price. I certainly have not had any of the problems outlined by some of the other reviewers. So far (knock on wood) the VCR and DVD player have worked well. Both give clear pictures and clear sound.
The reason why this is not a Five Star review is because it is completely lacking of any of the bells and whistles more expensive units have. The biggest thing I think it is lacking an user friendly programming method. Even though the remote has a numeric key pad on it, that keypad is not used for programming. Instead, when setting the VCR to tape a program, the up and down arrows are used to scan through the channels and times in order to set them. This is somewhat of a hassle because invariably the channel or time wanted is accidently bypassed as the scrolling picks up speed as the channels and times are scrolled. Therefore, it requires going back and forth with the up and down arrows. It would have been much easier to just allow the numeric key pad to be used.
Also, the unit is very slow to react to commands given from the remote. For instance, when pushing the "Play" button, it can take up to 10 seconds before the tape actually starts to play. Not a major problem, just a minor annoyance. (This is a problem I would find unacceptable with an expensive unit, but as the title of this review says, it is acceptable for this unit given its low price.)

VCR and DVD playback gives clear picture and sound
CONS:
Programming is not user friendly
Slow to react to remote commands
All-in-all, if you are looking for a inexpensive unit that can play videos and DVDs and copy them reasonably well and do not care about any bells and whistles that come with more expensive units, this unit will be perfect for you. I am using it in the guest bedroom where a fancier unit is not needed, so it is perfect.

| I have had this Zenith xbv442 since June of 2004 and have had no problems, but at the end of May 2005 the VCR wouldn't play tapes. It automatically ejected the tape, displayed error in the window, and then shut the machine off. Zenith said they would send me a new machine for $45 dollars with the return of the old one. Mine was made in May 2004 so hopefully it will be a new machine minus any old kinks. We'll see! |
