Great unit, but it stopped working |
| This DVD Recorder is excellent. Easy to use and great features. HOWEVER, after using it for 2 months the video output stopped working and I now have to send it back to Sony. Work in progress. |

Had potential but failed! |
I've had this unit for about 9 months now. I've had nothing but frustration with this unit. Another product that was rushed through R&D to market. I have trouble dubbing from HD > DVD with 'selected' shows (failed). The TV Guide feature doesn't not work correctly with all cable systems. I'm an engineer in the cable TV industry so I know how the technology works for this unit. Some cable systems inadvertently strip the data (VBI data) from the signal which is where the data is carried for the TV Guide feature to work. In addition, the timer recording (manual setup or schedule setup) has just vanished on it's own more than once. In other words, I'll have 4 shows programmed for record. They'll record no problem for 3-4 weeks and then for some reason, they all erase (as if the unit reset itself). I then need to go back and reprogram all these shows over again.
I called Sony support in regards to the TV Guide feature and they transferred me to several customer service reps since none of them could figure out what was wrong (or even understand the problem for that matter).
This unit's going on eBay very soon! I don't recommend this to anyone. I figured I'd give the unit some time but 9 months is enough!

| This recorder is fantastic.I don't have digital cable just standard cable/w/high speed internet.The tv guide works great just read the set-up and set the parameters for your type of service.No more setting times and days just find the movie/show on the tv guide screen,push a button and you're done.Nice huge hard drive and excellent picture quality,maybe better than the original show.Dubbing is simple and precise after you play with it for a day or so.This thing even lists the title of the recorded movie in the title list screen automatically unlike others I've had where you have to guess by the recorded time.I love this recorder and would recommend to anybody.Very nice rich styling also,unlike some of the cheap looking recorders out there.I don't know why people knock the tv guide feature,I think it works great you can even sort programs by movie/sports/and more ...very nice. !!I almost forgot,when you use the a/b edit (very simple and fast)about 5 mins. to edit a half hour of comercials out of a 2 hr. movie.You can even pick the exact frame to start and stop if you use the pause botton and the fwd/rev arrow key. |
